“Man, this stuff is coming down hard,” I say as I drive, hoping she doesn’t lose faith in my driving skills. I’m near squinting and can barely see six feet in front of my truck. The freezing temperature isn’t helping either as I keep hitting ice patches.
I see Daria shift in her seat and wince. I know she’s twisted that ankle even though she tries to tell me she’s fine.
“Still hurting?” I ask, already knowing the answer. I’m not sure why, but I feel like I want her to admit it instead of giving me some fake façade that she’s trying to be brave. There’s no harm in letting others know you need help. Well, until it comes to me. In which case I ignore that little rule my mom made up.
“Nah, it’s just a little tender. I’ll be fine,” she says.
I glance quickly before returning my eyes to peer out my windshield. Her expression tells me a totally different story.
“We’ll get back to my place and get you on the couch.” I say it before I think it through. “I mean. Get your ankle up and ice it.” I’m glad Micca is safe at my mom and dad’s house. At least I don’t have to worry if we have to stay off the roads. I wouldn’t want him coming home and seeing a stranger lying on the couch.
I slow down and take the corner to my street. The back end of my truck fishtails and I fight the steering wheel to gain control, but not before hearing Daria gasp in what I think is fear.
“Thought you’re from Detroit. This snow should be nothing to you.”
“Well, I didn’t drive in it very much.”
“Really? It seems like it’s always snowing up there. I’d have thought you took your driver’s test in it,” I joke, but when I glance over she’s looking out the window. Concern is written all over her face.
Pulling into my driveway, I realize I forgot to turn the lights on. I usually keep them on just in case my dad or mom have to run to my house to get something I might have forgotten for Micca.
“Sorry it’s so dark and eerie looking,” I say as put the truck into park. “Don’t get out yet,” I tell her quickly as I see her reach for the car door handle. I jump out and come around the truck, and my foot slides out from under me as I round the hood and grab it for dear life. I shake my head that we’ll both have sprained ankles if I’m not careful. Righting myself, I come around to her door and pull it open only to see her chuckling.
“Oh you think that’s funny, do you?” I shake my head as I laugh too, helping her out of the truck.
“Only because it’d be quite the sight having us both limping around.”
“Uh-huh. Unfortunately I wouldn’t make my mom drive out in this so we’d have only ourselves to get around.”
“Your mom lives near here?” she asks with uncertainty in her voice.
